Whitianga Information
An important area of early Maori and European settlement, Whitianga has been occupied for more than 1,000 years. The towns full name was "Te Whitianga a Kupe" or "Kupe's crossing place" after an early Maori explorer who settled there around 950 AD. Captain James Cook visited the bay in 1769 and the area was settled by Eurpoeans in 1836.
The "Wh" in the place name is prounounced "F", the same as many other New Zealand locations.
An important centre for industry in the early days of European settlement, Whitianga now has a much greater focus on tourism.
