Waitomo Caves is a spectacular series of limestone caves and a major tourist attraction in New Zealand.
Guided tours, adventure caving and even "black-water" rafting are on offer with the world famous glow worms perhaps the biggest draw card. Arachnocampa luminosa, the Waitomo glow worm, is found only in New Zealand and emitts an eirily beautiful glow in the darkness of the caves.

"Wai" is the Maori word for "Water" and "Tomo" means a sinkhole or cave entrance. This is very descriptive of the vast vertical shafts and pools of water within the Waitomo Caves.
