Manapouri Accommodation and Attractions
Manapouri Information
Manapouri sits on the edge of some of the most spectacular scenery in New Zealand. Positioned as a perfect base for exploring the Fiordland National Park, the town lies inland from the Westcoast on the shore of the lake with the same name. Nearby attractions include tramping, hunting and fishing but the name Manapouri is possibly most well known for the Manapouri hydro electric scheme. The scheme is the largest in the country and a staggering feat of engineering in that it has been contructed almost entirely underground in a location accessible only by boat (on the opposite side of the lake from the town). The impact on the surrounding countryside is therefore lessened.
The nearby Kepler track is a world famous tramp listed as one of the New Zealand Department of Conservations 'Eight Great Walks'. It runs in a 60 kilometres circuit between Te Anau and Lake Manapouri and was originally created to ease pressure on the popular Milford and Routeburn tracks.
