Haast Accommodation and Attractions
Haast Information
Now renouned for its hunting, fishing and whitebaiting, Haast proved to be a harsh environment for the early European settlers who tried to farm the land in the late 1800s. It is situated amoungst some of the most wild and beautiful scenery in New Zealand and even has its own unique species of Kiwi, the Haast Tokoeka, of which only 250 remain.
Whitebait is legendary on the West Coast and the glacial waters of the Haast river teem with millions of the tiny juvenile fish. Caught in nets, they are combined with as few other ingredients as possible to form the ultimate New Zealand delicacy, the whitebait fritter.
