Franz Josef Village acts as both a base for tourists visiting the famous glacier and support for the local farming community. Guided walks are available to (and on) the glacier as well as helicopter flights over some of the most beautiful scenery in New Zealand.

The glacier itself is almost unique around the world for the way it descends to only a few hundred metres above sea level through temperate rainforest, terminating around 20km from the ocean.
