Fox Glacier Village lies just a gentle 5km walk from the terminal face of Fox Glacier. It provides services to the many tourists who visit the area each year and to the nearby farming community. Visits to the glacier are unrestricted however a guided walk gives the opportunity to step onto the glacier and explore the incredible spectacle up close.
The truly remarkable aspect of the two glaciers (including Franz Josef Glacier to the North) is the way they terminate so close to sea level (within a few hundred metres) and in such a temperate, bush clad environment.
