Arthurs Pass Information
The road over Arthur's Pass is the highest of the three that cross the Southern Alps (the mountain range that runs almost the full length of New Zealand's South Island and includes Mout Cook, New Zealand's highest mountain).
It was discovered by Europeans shortly before a major goldrush on the West Coast in the late 1800s making the route a vital link.
Famous for the Arthur's Pass National Park and what was once the longest rail tunnel in the British Empire, the pass was trecherous up until the late 1990's when a section of the road prone to rock slides was replaced by the 440 metre Otira Viaduct.
